so i’ve seen a lot of people reblogging the episode of that’s so raven about racism in retail but I think Smart Guy handled this better.
The first picture is of the scene where Yvette and her friend Nina are hired by the store manager. The manager is racist and encourages employees to follow black customers around as a ‘loss prevention strategy’. Despite her actions clearly being racist the store manager later tells Yvette “I can’t be racist I hired you didn’t I?”. Yvette tries to prove to the manager that she is indeed racist. In the second picture she sets up a camera and in the last she shows the manager the video of her white friend clearly shoplifting very obviously who wasn’t noticed because the manager was busy following around her other friend a black male. This was the conversation that resulted
Store Manager: what are you trying to show me that your friend is a good theif
Yvette: you’re missing the point, you were so busy following the black customer you didn’t see what was really going on
Store Manager: which proves what
Yvette: all races shoplift but if you only follow black customers that’s all you’re ever going to catch
Yvette: I have 50 hrs of tape here
Store Manager: do you have 19 years of tapes, because that’s how long i’ve been in retail and that’s where I get my information
Yvette: but wait a minute the retail industry itself says that the average shoplifter is a white middle aged woman not unlike yourself. you are stripping people of their dignity because of their skin colour and it’s wrong
Store Manager: Yvette i’m sorry you feel this way and i’d understand if you chose not to work here anymore
I liked this episode because it showed just how no matter how much evidence you show someone with a racist mindset they will mostly just continue to defend their actions because in their minds they aren’t racist they’re right.
This show did something by showing just how racists can act like their behaviour is the most reasonable thing in the world and that’s what hit me hardest and something I think needs to be exposed more in media. People need to understand that consciously hating all black people isn’t the only way to be racist.
in the raven episode the big reveal is that the manager admits that she doesn’t hire black people but in reality thats not something they admit. But you’ll still see it in their actions and they’ll forever justify themselves and argue until their last breath that they aren’t racist.
Alright, don’t get me wrong, I adore Shameless. Literally my favorite show.
However, the Southside of Chicago is not a predominantly white neighborhood whatsoever. There was A LOT of whitewashing for this TV show. Which begs the question: why didn’t they set it in a poor, predominantly white neighborhood. The first one that comes to mind for me is Southie, in Boston, but that’s because I live near Boston and was born in Southie, but there must be other very poor, white neighborhoods in the country. They were not restricted to whitewashing a black neighborhood.
Small complaints for an otherwise wonderful show, but it bothers me.
Caelitus Mihi Vires: juvjuvychan: williamcarstair: dear marvel fans who are being…
dear marvel fans who are being incredibly racist and butthurt over the fact that johnny storm might - MIGHT - be cast with a black actor
there is no such thing as “black washing”
there is no such thing as “black washing”
there is no such thing as “black washing”
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BLACK WASHING SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH YOUR “HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF A TRADITIONALLY BLACK CHARACTER WAS PLAYED BY SOMEONE WHITE” BULLSHIT SHUT THE FUCK UP ARE YOU LITERALLY THAT SELF IMPORTANT AND IGNORANT?
BECAUSE MARVEL COMICS SO CLEARLY ARE IN A SURPLUS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CHARACTERS IT’D BE A SHAME TO SEE RACE NOT BE A BARRIER IN CASTING
BECAUSE THERE’S AN INCREDIBLE NUMBER OF BLACK SUPERHEROES SO THEY NEED TO BE PLAYED BY WHITE ACTORS TO EVEN OUT THE PLAYING FIELD
BECAUSE THERE’S AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF REPRESENTATION OF ANY RACE OTHER THAN WHITE DUDES IN MARVEL COMICS
O K A Y
When Marion Cotillard and Tom Hardy were cast as Taila Al Ghul and Bane (both of whom are canonically POC in the comics) and people complained, fans cried “oh well Nolan just got the best actors for the job!”
Well, I guess MBJ is just the best fucking actor for the job then huh?
City leaders in Oxford, Ala. have approved the destruction of a 1,500-year-old Native American ceremonial mound and are using the dirt as fill for a new Sam’s Club.Oxford’s Mayor Leon Smith — whose campaign has financial connections to firms involved in the $2.6 million no-bid project — insists the mound is not man-made and was used only to “send smoke signals.”
un-fucking-believable.
I don’t want to live in a country where a fucking Sam’s Club is more important than thousands of years worth of cultural and historic importance.
Seriously? We have so little physical historical record of pre-conquista North America, not to mention almost no oral traditions due to the genocide. And we’re tearing down what little we do have for a fucking Sam’s Club?

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on being detained at the U.S. Airport—twice. (Once, he was detained while promoting a film called “My Name is Khan” which was ironically about a person with the last name Khan suffering from repeated racial profiling.) Multiple actors and other prominent individuals in the film industry with the last name “Khan” have been detained when entering the country. Irrfan Khan (The Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, Spider-man) described the three times he was stopped—while on the way to receive honors for his roles in films such as The Namesake—as “humiliating.” Actor Aamir Khan was stopped and stripped searched in 2002. Director Kabir Khan, was reportedly detained at least three times in 2008 while filming in the United States. The New York Times ended up remarking on The Dangers of Fying While Khan This much is clear:
If you’re an award winning actor named Khan, you will still get stopped and humiliated at the airport. When that rare character in American media finally shows up sharing your name, he will be played by a white British man. That actor will wear your name for one movie and sneer and strut to great critical acclaim. You will wear your racialized name, your skin color, and hope you don’t get detained another time. Navajo Nation battles uranium corporations, nuclear industry
May 10, 2013Since European settlers first arrived on this continent, they set out to accumulate as much wealth and land as humanly possible. Their reign of terror on the indigenous populations —destructive of land, culture and entire communities—was the basis for immense fortunes that spurred the global economy and advancing capitalism.
This struggle, now over 500 years in the making, is ongoing on many fronts, including the Navajo Nation’s current battle over U.S. companies’ uranium extraction.
In early 2013, uranium companies approached the Navajo Nation in hopes they will allow them to renew mining operations on their land. These companies claim that they have developed newer and safer methods for extracting uranium, after decades of environmental destruction and abuse led the Navajo Nation to officially ban their mining.
This decades-long battle for environmental justice is part and parcel of the struggles for workers’ rights and Native self-determination, and against the forces of militarism and capitalism.
Exploitation of Navajo lands
The Navajo Nation sits on 27,425 square miles in the four corners area of the southwestern United States. The area holds a vast amount of uranium ore and thus has become a center in the struggle over nuclear energy and weaponry.
Since the end of World War II, and the onset of the so-called Cold War, the U.S. government began mining uranium domestically in order to not rely on foreign supplies. Uranium is one of the most common naturally occurring radioactive metals on the planet, and was understood as essential for the development of nuclear weapons and technology.
Due to the unique geology and consistent climate of the Southwest, mining companies saw the Navajo reservation as the most profitable site to open mining operations in the 1940s. In 1948, the United States Atomic Energy Commission declared it would be the sole purchaser of all uranium mined in the country, initiating a mining boom of private companies and contractors who knew they had a guaranteed buyer.
Of the thousands of uranium mines, 92% were located in the Colorado Plateau on which the Navajo Nation is located. Between 1944 and 1986 approximately 4 million tons of uranium ore was mined from Navajo Tribal land.
In the early days of mining, Navajo people flocked to the low-wage work given the scarcity of jobs around the reservation. The Navajo workers dealt with racist bosses and coworkers while going into the most dangerous and undesirable jobs at lesser pay. Nonetheless, after Navajo Code Talkers’ had famously contributed to U.S. forces in World War II, many Navajo workers believed they had a patriotic duty and responsibility to the United States.
Mineworkers were also lied to about the dangers of Radon poisoning.
and folks feel the need to jump on and add “black person” or tell me that “women in general” face shit.
NO. I meant BLACK women, specifically. Because I live in a world where
Psychology Today, a fairly well respected mental health publication, publishes a study finding Black women to be the most unattractive women on earth, and not until they received backlash from Black women, did they think the science was faulty
I live in a world where the Black First Lady of this country is constantly having her body and shape mocked, or being framed as a slave.
I live in a world, in which the best female tennis player’s body is mocked by a white woman on the tennis court and the entire audience just laughs.
I live in a world where Gabby Douglas is the first Black girl to win gold in the all-around and the media story makes it about her hair, and then turns around and blames Black women for it.
I live in a world where a white dude on tumblr feels the need to justify finding a Black woman attractive by stating he’s “not into Black girls, but she’s attractive” B/c you know, she was light skinned and curly haired enough to fit his standard of beauty.
I live in a country where Black women make up, at most like 10% of the US population, but we are constantly having articles written about us and why we are so fat. B/c it’s our fat asses that is bringing down the national economy or some shit.
I live in a world where Black men tell me the hair that grows out of my head naturally, ain’t for me.
I live in a world where a Black man can write about hating Black women, and then when Black women respond negatively, we are called angry, bitter, bitches/hoes, etc.
I live in a world where just last week a Black women wrote a post on the shit we as Black women face in relationships, and a white girl comes along an crosses out the word black, talkin’ about she “fixed” it. Erasing our unique experiences.
I live in a world where Black men will throw interracial dating, and marriage statistics in Black women’s faces in order to get us to shut up, and in the same breath claim to “love” Black women.
I live in a world, where a Black woman writes a post on mental health and a bunch of white women saviors feel the need to jump on and tell us exactly what our problem is.
I live in a world where Black daughters are left taking care of their elderly parents, financially, physically, and emotionally, but it’s the Black sons who get praised for making a god damn sandwich.
I live in a world where a Black woman makes a post about a horrific birthing experience of another Black woman, and how she would prefer a home birth, only to be called stupid and ignorant by white people, b/c we are endangering our children.
I live in a world where the face of the “welfare queen” is Black motherhood.
I live in a world where 90% of the people who will defend Black women against these constant attacks are other Black women, and we will get mansplained and whitesplained for our troubles.
So no, I absolutely did not mean “Black person” which usually translates to Black man or “women” which usually translates to “white women”
Don’t change my fucking words.
Remember when Lady Gaga made a music video where she killed her boyfriend and everyone called her a genius?
Well, remember when Rihanna made a video where she killed her rapist, and the media was, “This is too violent for mainstream airplay.”
That is called RACISM IN THE MEDIA.
She argues there’s another way to fight crime. “We ought to invest a lot more in our public schools. You know, feed the kids breakfast, lunch, and dinner; have after-school activities; keep the schools open until nine o’clock in the evenings and on weekends; invest in things like the Boys and Girls Club and the Park District—I mean, everything, basically, to dramatically ramp up the investments in our children.”
But even in Democrat-dominated Cook County, it’s hard to imagine that happening. “I was at an event last week, a fund-raising event, actually, where somebody said, ‘All my neighbors are Republicans—people who live on my block who I like, who wouldn’t support the idea you were just promulgating,’” Preckwinkle recalled. “And he said the people on his block he knew would rather pay to keep somebody incarcerated than to support music lessons or soccer team memberships or basketball team uniforms for kids in poor neighborhoods. “We’ve got in this country such distorted values. In the last 30 or 40 years we’ve invested all this money in our prison system, and our schools are starving for money.”

County board prez: Why are we closing schools and packing the jail? | Bleader that first paragraph up there—the stuff about investing in after school activities and keeping the schools open until 9pm, etc. —I’m thinking about that in context to of the Emergency Managers in Michigan. And how if they were *really* invested in fixing economic problems rather than privatization, they’d be figuring out ways to do *exactly* what she is suggesting. Making the schools an essential part of the community means that youth don’t drop out and people don’t transfer to other districts. it means that people *move into* that district. another example, what would happen if community groups were trained and paid to go to houses in the community and clean up lead? not only would it provide jobs, but when there’s a proven correlation between lead levels and low achievment in school—what effect would it have on student’s test schools and ability to focus and stay in school if their bodies aren’t being poisoned? there are seriously NO foundation grants for this sort of thing? why aren’t city mayors, councils, EMs, etc working their asses off to find foundation grants and corporate investment in cleaning up lead so that public schools can stay open—instead of building a whole new building to stick a charter school in? (via iinventedeverything) “people on his block he knew would rather pay to keep somebody incarcerated than to support music lessons or soccer team memberships or basketball team uniforms for kids in poor neighborhoods.” Next time I hear that we should fight racism with cool, calm logic, I will be thinking about this. Georgia town allegedly diverting sewage to black neighborhood
Rochelle, Ga. made national headlines recently when Wilcox County high school held its first-ever integrated prom last weekend.
Now, nonprofit environmental law organization Earthjustice is targeting the town for another instance of racial discrimination: its sewage treatment.
According to Earthjustice, “White residents of Rochelle live on the south side of the city’s railroad track. African-Americans live on the other side.” The city maintains pipes in the predominantly white neighborhood, but not the African-American side. “As a result,” writes Earthjustice, “untreated sewage backs up and overflows into the streets and the yards of residents on the north side of the tracks.”
“Sewage overflows my pipes and flows under my house. It’s time somebody did something about it. They [the white community] live comfortably and I want to live comfortably, too,” said Rochelle resident Rufus Howard.
Howard is one of nine Rochelle residents represented by Earthjustice, who will file a lawsuit under the Clean Water Act if the city does not resolve the issue in 60 days.
Yet another massacre has occurred in the historically war-torn region of the Southern United States – and so soon after the religious festival of Easter.
Brian McConkey, 27, a Christian fundamentalist militiaman living in the formerly occupied territory of Alabama, gunned down three men from an opposing tribe in the village square near Mobile, the capitol, over a discussion that may have involved the rituals of the local football cult. In this region full of heavily-armed local warlords and radical Christian clerics, gun violence is part of the life of many.
Many of the militiamen here are ethnic Scots-Irish tribesmen, a famously indomitable mountain people who have killed civilized men – and each other – for centuries. It appears that the wars that started on the fields of Bannockburn and Sterling have come to America.
As the sun sets over the former Confederate States of America, one wonders – can peace ever come to this land?
I don’t think I’ve ever met an immigrant community in the US that trusted cops.
… Except white people
fun fact: iraq, pakistan, afghanistan and saudi arabia have a higher percentage of women in the government than the us & the uk
another fun fact: white people tend to get very angry when you point this out to them
karkles-the-adorabloodthirsty:
apparently fox news specified for their confused viewers at home that “chechens are not caucasian”, which is perhaps the most succinct summary of why it’s a stupid term I have ever seen in my life
#chechnya is literally in the caucasus #that’s the joke.jpg #keeping the tags
Are you SERIOUS
so basically fox is trying to literally rewrite what “Caucasian” means by virtue of lying their asses off so that their viewers can rest assured that the boston bombers are “not white”
is that what you’re telling me
are you fucking kidding me
Donald Glover talking about the comments he received during his campaign to be the next Spider-Man (x)
“I was talking about it with Dan Eckman, who directed my Bonfire video. Can you imagine that trailer? That would be dope. Like it makes sense… a poor black kid in Queens. Like it just fits.”
